John 15:14 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
To be truthful, a lot of our friendships “just happen”. The same can be true of a lot of our romantic relationships in life… even in marriage. How many people truly seek out the kind of person that they want to spend their lives with? Don’t many of our relationships just “happen” unexpectedly?
Another truth is that not everyone wants the one who wants them. I”ve seen people ignore someone who pursues their friendship in order to pursue someone else who doesn’t seem that interested.
What if we began to CHOOSE our friends and companions, rather than just “letting it happen”?
That brings us to the third truth: Jesus is pursuing you. He wants you as His friend. He already laid down His life for you when you didn’t even know He was out there. He’s not a stalker. He’s not in this for Himself. He already loves you and me and we never even earned it.
So why are so many people pursuing other things and other directions than Jesus? Do we realize the difference between someone who just wants to “hang out” with us and someone who will loyally stand beside us when we are weak, stay with us when we don’t earn it, and love us when we’re less-than-perfect through the rest of our lives?
Another question: If you know that Jesus is your ultimate best friend, what kind of friend are you to Him? Are you an occasional companion or a committed, loyal, and loving friend?
This message will deal with our ability to CHOOSE:
- Who our real friends are.
- To whom we will be a real friend.
