1 John 4:13-16 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
As we’ve studied the epistles of John (letters written to a struggling church), much of the emphasis has been upon clarifying some basic truths that we all should know. Confusion had come because the Greek society was penetrating the church, teaching wrong doctrine. That can easily happen to us in today’s society. Let’s face it, the things that are now acceptable to the media and much of the world are not acceptable to God according to His word.
John didn’t have the Bible. In fact, his letters would be included in the Bible when it was put together. What John did have was the fact that he walked and talked and lived with Jesus. He heard Jesus teach and knew first-hand what Jesus said. Now he’s teaching them.
In this message we’ll hear what John had to say about God’s real love and the results of it according to Jesus. He talks about the evidence that God’s love is in us; that let ourselves and others know that it is there. He shares about the Holy Spirit and His role in the changes of our lives. He brings out the way that God’s love eliminates much of the fears of our lives, and the fact that God’s overflowing love should be spilling out to others, eliminating hatred from our lives.
I promise that you will find this message relevant to your own life, even as it was relevant to the church in that day.
