1 John 4:17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world, we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.
One of the key verses in this passage says that “in this world, we are like Jesus.” Most of us would cower at that thought because we know all of the ways we are not like Jesus. Some of us are our own greatest critic and we don’t feel like we are worth loving by a perfect Savior. Since we don’t love ourselves (in the proper way), we have a hard time comprehending the Creator of the Universe thinking we are loveable. Since we don’t love ourselves, we have a hard time offering ourselves to others in friendship, because we lack the confidence that they will want what we have to give. So, the fear that we live with is that no one could possibly love us if they really knew us. The evidence? We know ourselves and we don’t like ourselves.
Let me share in this message, some other evidence. The evidence in the word of God and the experience of many of your friends and family, says that God loves you anyway. The word and witness of others say that He wants a personal love-relationship with you. He knows you better than yourself and He wants you. He tells you that He can teach you to love others.
This will be a very healthy message for those of you with wounds from the past, those of you who are insecure, and those who are presently dissatisfied with the relationships of your life. The Holy Spirit can use the scriptures and truths of this message to heal and free you for a new self.
