The Art of Making Disciples

One day Jesus gave instruction to His disciples, telling them He was going, but would be back. He also told them that they knew the way to where He was going. Only Thomas, the disciple we sometimes villainize for doubting, had the courage to ask Jesus the question on his heart.

John 14:5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

In our new series, we will look at the fact that Jesus gave us a mission to both be and make more disciples. I am not ashamed to ask any questions that it may take to fulfill this mission.

  • What is a disciple?
  • Where do I sign up?
  • Is there a manual for being one?

Let’s face it, we don’t always know the next move to make as a disciple of Jesus. So, this series will be an adventure in moving forward, in knowing what to do next, in growing as a disciple, and in generally understanding and fulfilling the will of Jesus for our lives.

Teachable Disciples

There is a phrase that is sarcastically used to point to the need to try something new. That phrase is, “How’s that working for you?” The message is that the present methods are ineffective. The truth is, however, that people seldom change the way they do the things they do, unless they find a strong…

Dealing With Doubt

John 20:25b …“Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Those are the words of the apostle Thomas, who is so famous for being a doubter. He wasn’t the only disciple who doubted; in fact…

Jesus Restores His Disciples

Have you ever had a friend betray you? The betrayal brings pain, but so does the loss of your fellowship with that friend. Sometimes the issue can be resolved and forgiveness conferred, but the friendship is never the same. Trust has been broken, and though friendship is restored, the trust remains broken.

Jesus invested all…

After the Resurrection

Many times we think of the resurrection as the ‘end of the story’. Actually, if this were a football game, this would be the kickoff. All that happened before was training season and Jesus was about to launch his disciples into the world to preach and teach, so that others could receive salvation through Jesus…

Can Broken Disciples Be Fixed ?

We’ve all heard stories of broken lives, where a marriage was saved, someone was healed, finances were provided by an intercession of Jesus in those lives. We think of salvation as the end, of the need for Jesus to intercede, but the reality is that salvation is only the beginning. It is not only non-Christian…

Jesus Coming … Me Going

A family came into some money and decided to get new furniture for their house. Couches, beds, dressers, dining room table. TV, hutch, lamps, end tables, recliners and all were purchased. Then it was time to bring them in and there was no room. Y’see, they wanted new furniture, but they also wanted to keep…

A HUMAN DISCIPLE OF A HEAVENLY SAVIOR

If you give a plumber a choice of plumbing a new house or fixing the plumbing on an old house, he’ll probably take the new house. Fixing something that’s broken and worn out is just tougher than starting with fresh, unspoiled materials.

So, when we give our lives to Jesus, we are giving him a…

Choosing Discipleship

Becoming a disciple of Jesus doesn’t just “happen”. It is a choice that we make or don’t make. Without that choice, the progression into being a disciple of Jesus can’t happen. We begin with salvation, which is a choice… being “born again”. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the “belief” in your mind makes…

A Work of Art in Progress

A story is told about Michelangelo beginning his work to carve the statue of David. Someone standing nearby noted all of the marble that was being wasted as he “chipped away”. The artist answered the challenge, “As the chips fall, the image emerges.” When you allow the work of God to grow greater in you,…
