The Gift of the Manger

Do you remember what the Christmas song says? I used to lay in bed examining my life for the previous year, waiting for Santa and thinking, “He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows when you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake You better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout, I’m telling you why… Santa Claus is coming to town.”

The disappointing part is that it was all on me… and it was too late if I hadn’t been good. Fortunately, I was an angelic child and I always got great presents.

Now let’s look at reality. Here’s a scripture that says some of the same things:

Psalm 139:1 (International Children’s Bible) Lord, you have examined me. You know all about me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts before I think them. 3 You know where I go and where I lie down. You know well everything I do.4 Lord, even before I say a word, you already know what I am going to say.

The difference is this. First of all, God has given me blessings when I haven’t been that good. Secondly, He is willing to get in and help me to do right if I ask Him, because He sends His Holy Spirit to empower me. Thirdly, because of Jesus, He is ready to forgive and not condemn (John 3:17). Finally, and most importantly, God gives grace that covers my sin once I have accepted Jesus, received His forgiveness, and started on my journey to follow Him all the rest of my life. He never leaves me and His grace is more than sufficient.

John 1:11 He came to the world that was his own. But his own people did not accept him. 12 But some people did accept him. They believed in him. To them he gave the right to become children of God.

Read those four things again. The gift He wants for His birthday is YOU! And just look at the gifts you receive.
